Set up permalinks

    I’ve been blogging for nearly two years. I have known about permalinks, tried to use them once and lost all my posts until I switched back to the ugly form – BIG scare to a newbie!

    Now, I would like to restructure my blog to include them. I have checked the codex, searched the forums, read a few blog posts and even downloaded a couple of things.

    However, in the end, it seems I need to be able to write code and programs in order to use permalinks. I cannot do that; functionally illiterate.

    Is there another way?

    Any advice much appreciated; you folks are usually pretty great about providing answers!

    You don’t need to code, just change the permalinks under “settings”->”permalinks”. When your system is good for al the requirements, everything should be done for you.

    With all due respect, no, it is not that easy. I went to Settings/Permalinks and clicked on Custom, then wrote what I thought was appropriate. That lost my posts for me.

    Then I clicked one of the other options and save that, and that lost my posts for me.

    Then I clicked Default, and that restored my posts for me.

    I understand enough to know that when you change the permalink option, all of your old posts need file redirects, yes? So, I had downloaded Dean’s Permalink Migration plugin and tried working with that. No change.

    Now I’m back where I started. At least people can still find my posts, even if the links are not pretty.

    I really need someone to walk me through this process if I am ever going to be able to manage it. Sorry if I’ve wasted anyone’s time here.

    Dena, it’s ok. You didn’t lose your posts, they are still there ?? Are you on a Linux server? If so make sure mod_rewrite is turned on.

    Sorry to take so long to get back to this. I’m on a MacBook Pro using OS 10.5.4; is that Linux?!? Where do I turn on mod_rewrite? See – I told you I was illiterate . . .

    barnyoka, he means what sort of server has your webhost put your blog on? You can find this out by checking out the admin interface for your web hosting service.

    mod_rewrite is a rule that can be modified in your .htaccess file

    if you don’t know what you’re doing with your .htaccess file you can really muck things up – follow the instructions exactly

    I’ve since learned that I must be on Linux. Thanks for the link to the codex. I’ve been there before, and it all looks a bit intimidating to me. I’m so impressed by the speed with which WP has developed. I think I’ll just wait until someone comes up with a widget or a new version of WP that will handle this job for me. My ugly permalinks may be ugly, but they do work!
