Automatic upgrade FTP password bug

  • I think I found a bug in 2.7. I kept getting this error when trying to upgrade plugins or wordpress itself:

    Error: There was an error connecting to the server, Please verify the settings are correct.

    I just figured out that it was a password problem. I had the password correct, but the wordpress automatic upgrader doesn’t work if your password contains special characters (e.g. +,*,\,%). I tested with an alpha-numeric (letters and numbers only) password and it works just fine.

    I can use an FTP client no problem with the strong password, so that makes me think it’s a wordpress bug.

    Does anyone else want to test this to see if it’s a wordpress bug or host-specific issue? I’m hosted with dotable.com

    Just create an ftp user with a password containing some special characters ($%*&) and try to install or delete a plugin through the admin panel using that ftp account. If that fails, test the ftp account in a client.

    yes! wordpress 2.8.4 password contain this .}\*|$ special characters
    and wordpress don’t upgrade!!

    Gotta love the intuitive ‘auto upgrade’ mechanism eh? I don’t think any other WordPress “feature” has caused me so many problems.

    The bug still exists… eleven months down the line.
