After reading and watching some videos on how to drive more traffic to my blog of 8 months I decided that I had to create a database. Being a newbie and an idiot I didn’t realize that I already had one.

Then when I went to log onto my blog I got the screen to install wordpress. This didn’t sound right, and actually sounded like a horrible idea. So I never did.

The next day when I went to logon to my blog I get the error message “cannot connect to database”. This made me think that I should check to see if I had created it correctly. I did this through cPanel on hostgator. This turns out to be a good system, they create the MySQL when you install wordpress. I wish I new that beforehand.

So I thought the fix would be to delete the new database and to change the wp-config.php back to the old database and username. I did this but still cannot connect to my database. I can still see on my real, beautiful, lots of hardwork and pretty good traffic database is still there.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix my idiotic mistake so my world can return to normal?

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Hi

Your idea to revert to the original database is correct.

Its most likely you just didn’t get the original settings completely back to the way there were in wp-config.php You need to revert the database name, user name, and user password.

If you don’t know the original password, you can create a new database user in cpanel and assign that user to the original database (there can be more than one user assigned to a database). Change wp-config.php to the new user and password. If you get it working you can then in cpanel delete the original user name that’s no longer being used.
