    It is safe to remove the default themes, but we do recommend keeping the latest (currently Twenty Seventeen) around.

    The default themes have had a lot of effort put into them and are, for lack of a better term, “certified bug-free.” That makes them an invaluable troubleshooting tool for ruling-out theme conflicts.

    Please also review insuring your default theme is always up to date and please know you can add a default theme as needed (by FTP if needed). The OP’s two links deal with differing topics and it’s important to understand each one’s purpose and scope.

    1. Best way to troubleshoot an issue is to deactivate plugins and switch to a default theme.
    2. Removing and then replacing based on 1 may be a better write up if you think that theme may be at issue.
