• apparently just found out our site has 2 sitemaps, the one we set up and then one from the yoast seo plug in

the site is over a year old and is indexed by search engines…. should we just leave them both up? the yoastseo plugin page says we should delete the other one or disable the yoast one…. any thoughts on what our best course of action is?

thanks for your reply, our site is semi nsfw…. not porn but definitely talks about sex a lot so thought we should mention it

this is what yoast says ‘The following file is blocking your XML sitemaps from working properly. Either delete it (this can be done with the “Fix it” button) or disable Yoast SEO XML sitemaps.
    /var/sites/g/guysnightlife.com/public_html/sitemap (1).xml’

here are the two site maps we see in google webmaster tools:

    https://guysnightlife.com/sitemap_index.xml

that one has 1539 pages submitted and 1501 indexed, with 6700 images submitted and 4980 indexed

    https://guysnightlife.com/sitemap.xml

that one has 1535 pages submitted and 1488 indexed, 2485 images submitted and 1970 indexed

a dude on fiverr we worked with before said to disable the yoast one… no idea if he is right or not

thanks if you can offer any assistance

also asked our hosting, they said either keep both up (not a problem) or to get rid of yoast one… would you guys concur?

    @guy11,

I personally suggest keep the sitemap generated by Yoast (https://guysnightlife.com/sitemap_index.xml), and get rid of https://guysnightlife.com/sitemap.xml.

Here is a good read about Google XML Sitemaps vs Yoast SEO.

    I hope this helps.

A previous plugin or developer likely added the non-Yoast sitemap. If you have more than one, you start with a sitemap index file and not two files as noted (remove the non-index one). Please review in detail if one is generated by Yoast and one by a physical file. If so, you should see clear notices related to such in the Admin dashboard of Yoast – your best advice on this issue is with Yoast.

fiverr guy (whose advice i trust least) suggests deleting the yoast one

my hosting says either keep both or get rid of yoast

you guys say keep yoast and get rid of the other

    lol…. i hate uncertainty :p

    Hi @guy11,

    (1) You only need a single sitemap which you can then submit to Google. You don’t need multiple sitemaps, so keeping multiple sitemaps doesn’t make any sense (at least to me).
    (2) I recommended keeping sitemap generated by Yoast because that’s what I use personally (https://dipakgajjar.com/sitemap_index.xml) and for most of my clients, and we all have a very good results (satisfaction) so far.

The one generated by Yoast is dynamic and will keep up to date when new pages and posts are created.

Make sure to check your dynamic robots.txt file also.
