Website not loading, downloading a file called “download” instead

Hi,

When I’m working on my website (inside the WP dashboard), the website sometimes starts functioning and every time I click on something, a file downloads.

For example a file entitled “download” or “edit.

My hosting provider has informed me something is writing code in my .htaccess file but was unable to tell me where this code is coming from, suggesting it might be a WordPress plugin.

I’ve deleted most plugins now but the error keeps happening.

Any ideas why?
