Permalink problem for Category with no posts

    I have a category with no posts.But when i visit that category page i got page not found error[which is coming from index.php].
    But i want display custom messege like “There are no posts in this category”.
    For that i created a category.php template file.There i am cheking whether this category having posts or not,if dont have any posts i am displaying “There are no posts in this category”.

    Its working fine i.e. showing messege without permalinks.
    But whenever i enable permalinks its not working i.e. not showing messege,only showing page not found messege[coming from index.php].

    May i know what is the problem.Plz help me guys.Tanx in advance.
