All categories missing, cannot save and retain them

    Something awfully strange has happened. Until yesterday everything was normal but today, all my categories are gone. None are listed on my Categories page. However, within a post and when I choose ‘most recent’, it does show up the category names I saved.

    I’ve tried doing it again but if I try and go back to the Categories page to double check, none of them are there. It seems saving Categories does nothing.

    Can I ask what has happened and how to I fix it?

    Update: my WordPress admin says I have 19 categories but they aren’t listed and checking in PHPMyAdmin, there seems to be no errors.
