WP Smush Asking To Compress

    Hi there,

    I have WP Smush, and according to the plugin in all my images are smushed. However, whenever I run a performance test via Hummingbird I am getting poor performance due to image optimization.

    It tells me to compress images that are a)already resized to the correct sizes and b)smushed via WP Smush. I’m not able to modify them any further without terrible loss.

    The first 6 images in the report are all under 350px x 350px at 72 dpi, but I’m still being told to compress them. I can’t because WP Smush tells me they are all already smushed.

    Can you please advise as to why or how to correct this? Either through Hummingbird, or how my images can be compressed and not compressed at the same time?

    Hey @torrielynn,

    Hope you’re well.

    As far as I understand your images needs to resize beside compression. So Smush can compress images but can’t resize it (only resize full-size images). Your theme can do that according to design or you should do that manually. If you use the image on the page at 150×150 area but your image is 350×350 so the performance test will say the image needs optimization.

    Hi Oguz,

    Thanks for answering me. In my original post, I shared that these images have already been resized before being uploaded to WP. Yet Hummingbird is still asking me to compress them. When I go to the files individually in the media library, they have already been smushed and resized appropriately.

    If my images are already resized before upload, and then compressed, why am I still getting messages from Hummingbird to compress these images?

    Sorry for the confusion @torrielynn. This is what we were trying to explain. The image you have embedded, in its natural state, is not scaled for the themes container. You can see that here:

    The image you uploaded is 728×582. The container is 340×272.

    Crop the image to the container size before uploading the image.

    If you are on a retina screen you will probably want to upload and serve a 2x image as well. This can be done using the HTML scrset attribute.
