What is needed for Automatic Update to work exactly?

  • I am seeing differences on customers different web hosts regarding the automatic plugin update functionality and I have not been able to find anywhere a list of specs for hosts in order for this feature to work.

    Would be very useful with a list of requirements for the automatic update of plugins (and Core) to work.

    How should the file permissions be for the installation – is safe mode off required (are there workarounds?) – any other requirements. I think a list like that would be super useful for all the hosts that want to become WordPress friendly.

    If they’re running PHP 5 and up, and suPHP, then it almost always works.

    Safe mode off is required for almost all scripts. No host I know of ever runs in safe mode. You can’t do anything useful with safe mode on.

    And it’s really not possible to define exactly what they did which breaks it. A stock Linux server install, with no special (useless) “safety” modifications, works fine. I have taken RHE servers, installed them stock, stuck them straight onto the internet, and never had a problem.

    Well… I wouldn’t go that far. I would expect that parts of WP would not work with safe mode, but I have not tested it to any great degree.

    If safe_mode really needs to be off for Dashboard -> Tools -> Update to work, then should there be a warning on that page (similar to the writable .htaccess warning in the permalinks options)? Right now, it just fails silently.

    Or if WP really works best if safe_mode is off, should there be a warning during installation?
