How to add a placeholder

I hope you are well today and thank you for your question.

Actually the search form markup is generated by the theme that you are using on your site so you have to change the code in your child theme to add a placeholder to the search box.

You can do this two ways either using WordPress get_search_form filter or changing the code in theme file searchform.php as described in the following topic.
