I am rebuilding a site on a different platform while the live site is still up and running. I have installed WP on my new server and when I click to preview my static home page, all I see is the index page. When I click to view any other page, I get a 404 error. I have verified there is an htaccess file and index file installed (I’ve been Googling since last night).

I have a note into the new web host, but I am hopeful I can find an answer here.

Since I am building on a new IP, my host file is pointed to the new site and not the live site.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

Go to Settings->Permalinks and select your required option & save. This will rebuild your htaccess file.

I believe you have already specifed the page you need as homepage under Settings->Reading.

Let me know if you still face issues after the above steps are done.

    Good day!

I’m not 100% sure I understand your issue, but it sounds like an HTML file is loading. Most hosts automatically add an index.html file in the root of your new site. Look for index.html via FTP or your web hosting panel and delete it. Just be sure to delete index.html and NOT index.php.

Thank you for the suggestion. The Permalinks setting was set to be static and named my Home page, but I saved it just to rewrite the file and unfortunately that did not work.

Thank you for this suggestion. I searched for all files that contained index.html and this is the result. Should I delete one or both of these? All other index files are .php.

    Hi,
You don’t need to erase the files you habe listed above. You only need to erase index.html is present in the public_html directory / website root.

Also if you could describe in detail, the changes you have made after installation of WordPress, it would help in analysing the problem.

Thank you. There is not a index.html in public_html directory / website root, I just checked again to make sure.

What changes I did make after the installation, I’ve removed. When I changed something and it did not work, I removed the change/changed it back to the default settings.

I am truly stumped. Thank you so much for your help.

Have you created the page you want to set as homepage & added the content?

If possible, share the screenshot of the page you are currently getting.

I have created the home page and added a line of content. How do I share screenshots in here?

Upload the screenshot to your server or use https://imgur.com and share the link

Let me know if you need to see something else inside of WP.

Ah. Looks like you have installed WordPress inside the folder wp. That’s why you are getting folder indexes and 404 error while accessing pages.

You need to move the WordPress files from wp folder to the public_html folder.

It would be better to install a new copy of WordPress in public_html directory if you have made only a few changes. Or you can move the existing files and do a database search & replace.

You can disable folder indexing by using the indexes section in cPanel. It’s better to do so as it can improve security of your site.

Try the above steps and let me know.
