Can I ask a little more what you mean by ‘row’ element? I’d love to learn more. Page layout is something that would happen after 5.0, in the Customization focus. Is this what you are looking for as the next step?

I am not sure what you are planning for “Page layout”, but let me explain what I think. If I want to put 3 images (one next to another), how do I make it? I don’t see a way to make it in Gutenberg now. Currently, in Gutenberg you can have only one element per row (one paragraph, image, table…). There’s “Text Columns” block under “Layout Blocks”, but this block let me add just plain text in evenly divided columns.

“Row” (or however you name it) could be a placeholder for other blocks. It would have parameter Grid layout (with options like 4-4-4 or 2-8-2 or 8-4, etc. for 12 columns grid). If I select 4-4-4, it will let me add 3 blocks inside this block (in example 3 image blocks).

So, if user is not using this Row block, it would basically have what we have now (one block per row for simpler posts/pages). But, using the new Row block, we would have ability to divide our content vertically and create more complex posts/pages.

One more thing, I don’t think Gutenberg should be overloaded with too many blocks, like other page builder plugins. But, it’s very important to allow theme developers to add custom blocks in Gutenberg easily. So, if it’s in example a travel theme, user may expect additional Gutenberg block with ability to easily add maps.

Ah, so what you’re saying really does seem to fall into ‘page layout’, which is good news as that is coming. Thanks for clarifying.

Theme developers and plugin developers will be able to add blocks. Probably them being in plugins makes more sense than themes – think of the issues caused by theme switches otherwise.

I’m personally most concerned because we’re heavy users of ACF and custom fields in general and I haven’t yet got a clear view about the support for this in the future.

I’ve reached out to ACF to comment on this, but are there any thoughts from inside the build community on what the future might hold in this regard?

@dmje metaboxes is being worked on and this will allow things like ACF to work.

I am testing version 1.4 and it’s almost there (see my first post). Now, I can use Text Columns block (limited to 4 columns though, should be increased), and insert images or other elements into the columns, using HTML mode.

It will be great to include the Image icon (and maybe some others, commonly used) in the small toolbar of 5 icons (see my image).
