I installed wordpress on my site (comutersponge.com) and everything was working fine. Then I used the wordpress secret key generator, and put the keys in the wp-config.php. Everything seemed to be working fine. But when I tried to register a test user, I would get a 500 internal server error after hitting the register button. After countless hours I discovered that if I delete the keys from the config file, registration works just fine. What should I do?

  • Who is your host?

Did they make any changes/upgrades recently?

Is there anything in your logs (ask your host if you don’t have access to the logs).

My host is GoDaddy. I’m not aware of any recent changes. I can access my database through phpMyAdmin, but I’m not sure where the logs would be. Where would I go for that? I would much rather not involve GoDaddy support, they haven’t been much help. thanks

If you don’t know where the logs are, Godaddy will have to help you unless someone pipes in with that knowledge.

Check your web-root folder for error_logs or logs folders.

Alright I found the logs file, what am I looking for in it? I’m not sure what most of it means

Errors resulting from visiting your blog, with date and time that is approximate to visiting your blog.

May need to post a few lines of errors for us to see.

I don’t see any errors in the log. It doesn’t even show what I’ve done in the last couple hours. I’ve redownloaded it to see if its been updated but it hasn’t. I called GoDaddy support and they claim that there aren’t any log files. I wish I could talk to someone there that knows what they are doing. Is there anything else I could to do help you figure this out?

Oh I will also note that after installing WordPress on my site, I imported my blog from wordpress.com. Does that change anything?

Ok so I did some testing and the registration works fine if I just leave the “NONCE_KEY” blank. Would it be unsafe to just leave it like this?

If the choice is a working blog then it’s not that big of a deal.
