In general this plugin works well. This happens for at least one specific domain, maybe more but I don’t know. Any subscriber with an email in the @bkfoptimum.pl domain gets immediately two emails:

First comes the email confirming the subscription.
Second comes the email asking to click on a link to confirm subscription.

None of the links in the emails work. Subscriber cannot confirm or unsubscribe.

In the Post Notif panel in WordPress Admin page, the subscriber is not in the list.

Users with emails in other Polish domains, GMail, Outlook.com etc. are able to register, but nobody with an email in @bkfoptimum.pl domain is able to subscribe. Very strange.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi bartuniek,

First of all, thanks for giving Post Notif a try; I am sorry you’re encountering weird behavior for certain domains.

Without publicly revealing any real email addresses, can you confirm/refute whether any of the specific emails that are having this problem contain “+”, “-“, or any other characters that are not letters, numbers, or more standard pieces of email addresses (e.g., “.”, “_”, and “@”)?

You may have already ruled this out, but strange behavior by the plugin, due to inclusion of these other characters in email addresses, has been top of mind for me lately, due to the inclusion of a fix for this in (the just released) Post Notif 1.1.5.

    Thanks,
    Devon

    Hi Devon,

There are no special characters in the emails, just letters.

Something that just occurred to me, maybe the email server that is receiving the email is scanning the contents doing some proactive checking on the links contained in the body of the email, thus effectively clicking on them. This would explain why the subscriber is receiving the confirmation email before the email asking him to confirm. If the email server’s anti-spam or anti-phishing mechanisms are doing it, then in effect they are clicking on the confirmation link and then clicking on the unsubscribe link, that would explain why I don’t see the subscriber in the list.

How can I check that? Does Post Notif have any log that would reveal such sequences taking place?

    Thanks,
    Bart

    Hi Devon,

For sure it is caused by the email server behind that domain, and most likely not your code. I forwarded a post notification that came to my inbox to the email of the subscriber that is having issues. And guess what, I got unsubscribed just a few seconds later without receiver ever reading that email.

    I’ll keep you posted.

    Hi Bart,

Thanks for the followup info from your investigation. I am glad you don’t think it is Post Notif causing the issue ?? though I do want you to be able to resolve the problem, obviously!

Please do let me know what you find as the root cause.

    Thanks,
    Devon

    Hi Bart,

I hope you’ve been able to get things working. Since it has been several months since there’s been activity on this thread, I am going to mark it as resolved.

    Thanks,
    Devon
