Upgrade vs. Fresh install

    I have had my WordPress site since version 1.2. Along the way I’ve upgraded to 2.0.4. I am currently in the process of migrating to a new hosting provider (dreamhost.net) and was wondering what the best upgrade path would be? Dreamhost has a one-click install for WordPress 2.7. I was thinking about using that and then moving my database over from the old server but am not sure how well that would work.

    Are the 2.0.4 and 2.7 database schemas the same?

    I would like to make a fresh start but I don’t want to make a ton of work for myself. My current site has only a few customizations but they are php hacks and not particularly well documented.

    My current plugins are:
    Lightbox JS v2
    WordPress Email Notification Plugin v2.3.1
    WP-Print 2.20
    ImageManager 2.4.1

    I could just run the upgrade on the old server, fix whatever breaks, and move the whole thing over lock stock and barrel to the new server. But then I’ll bring along possible legacy junk I don’t really need anymore.

    Any thoughts?

  • One possibility–upgrade to 2.3, then 2.5, then 2.7 at old host. Then use the Tools->Export and take that WXR file to your newly installed Dreamhost site and do Tools->Import->WordPress.

    Make sure you have a database backup of your old site before beginning and meke sure you have a backup of every file on your old site (see WordPress Backups).

    Hmmm..that sounds like a lot of work. If I go down that path are the upgrade instructions the same for each release? I am assuming that these:

    Yes those instructions work for all upgrades but Upgrading WordPress Extended has more details. In theory you should be able to go from 2.0.4 to 2.7 directly but…

    Well…that was a nuisance but it worked. I’m now running 2.7 on the old host. There are a few hand tweaks that will need to be done but everything seems to be working ok.

    I think I’ll save the migration to the new host for another day.

    Now to get a backup of the current config…
