• I just installed WordPress onto my server, I’m using a VPN and Plesk / Parellels. I am using the free consulting theme, but have duplicated these issues on the twenty seventeen and twenty fifteen theme as well

I am new to forums in general, so apologies ahead of time for any mistakes I will make. Especially on tagging the topic.

At first I was able to change the name under site title in settings. I also added a tagline, clicked Save and Publish and that stuck. This was yesterday.

Today I go into customize my theme, I uploaded photos into the media library. They successfully upload – either by dragging and dropping or by the file browser. After I use them once from that step, they disappear when I go to another customization that requires a picture.

Nothing is “saving and publishing” I have no active plugins, I think the two that are there were automatically put there. Akismet Anti-Spam and Hello Dolly.

Please help!!! Thank you for your time in advance.

  • Hello, lorizb & welcome. I took the liberty of editing your tags for you so you can see how we do it on the WordPress forums, ie, each tag is separated by a comma (,). We’re glad you’re here, & please don’t worry about making mistakes. We’re here to help in any way we possibly can. The only way to learn is to ask, & we’ll certainly try to be accommodating.

Understanding that the site is still under construction, it would be very helpful if you’d please provide us w/a site url so we can look at what’s up. My first suspicion is that it’s an ownership problem, ie, the WordPress files need to be owned by the webserver user & group, which is often, though not always, called www-data. This applies to the root where WordPress is installed & all subfolders. So my first thought is to check file ownership & change it appropriately, either to the webserver user & group or by making the current owner a part of the webserver group.

I didn’t provide a great deal of detail because, foolishly or otherwise, I’m assuming a fair amount of technical prowess when using a VPS server, simply because it’s required. However, having said that, I’ve worked w/folks who didn’t have that sort of expertise, & the result is usually pretty grim unless they have someone helping w/regard to the technicalities, as those can become fairly overwhelming rather quickly. If you need the details of how it’s done, let us know, & we can provide those.

Thank you Jackie! Your help is much appreciated.

So currently I installed the Word Press platform on galico.international/home

I installed through the app feature in Plesk. I didn’t upload it FTP style.

Eventually I would like it just on galico.international or I’ll redirect it there.

I spoke with my father (who handles the hosting) to see if there were permission issues that needed to be overridden or enabled. Do you mind elaborating on how I check ownership? I apologize, it’s been such a while since I’ve done any of this.

The theme that is up there now, is not what I would like to use. I was activating different ones to duplicate the issue. I just gave up by the time I reached that one.

    Thank you once again!
    Lori

Lori, what tools are you using to access your file system, ie, are you using FTP or SSH? I suspect this will be far easier w/SSh, truthfully. You might also wish to tell us if you’re using Windows or Mac. That knowledge will help us post the most appropriate instructions for your particular situation.

    Thanks.

    Hi Jackie,

I apologize but I don’t know what SSH is vs. FTP. I installed WP via the Parellels/Pesk. Then I’ll go into Plesk and access the WP administrative interface from there. I am still waiting to hear back from the IT guy with our hosting about permissions. I tried to google SSH and understand what it was. I am sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

    https://www.plesk.com

but I access that through my hosting’s back end when I log in.

Thank you again for your time!

    Hi Jackie,

The IT support still hasn’t gotten back to me. I am thinking of youtubing how to install wordpress via FTP to try that way. Do you know how I would access the back end to customize the site? Would it be through www.remarpro.com? If so, what username and password would I use? My FTP login?

Lori, it certainly would not be thru www.remarpro.com, as all that site does is provide the WordPress application. Often, the FTP credentials are the same as your Plesk credentials, may be found via Plesk, or an account may be created there. You may also wish to look at your Plesk account regarding SSH.

    Thanks Jackie,

I know and have my FTP credentials. Was just wondering if I would access the admin interface through Plesk or a different avenue. I will uninstall and reinstall. I will try looking for the SSH.

    Thanks again!

Lori, I’m saying you can change ownership via an FTP client.

    (@lorizb)

Oh ok, my apologies. That’s a little beyond my scope. I will try and see how I can make this work. I am just going to start from scratch and install it using FTP, see if that makes a difference.

Lori, it really isn’t. I can tell you how, you’ll just need to tell me what FTP client & operating system you’re using.

I have Windows 8.1 pro – I was accessing ftp://galico.international:225 via the regular windows file explorer.

So I downloaded File Zilla. I downloaded the latest version of WordPress.

I am trying to follow these steps:

    https://www.wpbeginner.com/how-to-install-wordpress/#installftp

I am hung up on where to install it in the root folder. The only options I have are the folders:

    ..
    error_docs
    httpdocs
    logs
wordpress (I just threw it here, my idea is that I want people putting my url in and going directly to the site, galic.international)

    The next step is databases:

“Once you are done uploading WordPress, go to your hosting control panel to create a database. We are using cPanel web hosting, so our screenshots will be of cPanel. In your cPanel, find the icon like this”

    Thread Starter Lori

    (@lorizb)

I created a mysql database and user. The next step is to:

“You will be now asked for the privileges you want to allow this user. Select all privileges and click on the Make changes button.

Your MySQL database and user are now ready, and it is time to run the WordPress install.

Simply go to to the URL where you uploaded WordPress. If it is in the main domain, then enter your domain name in the browser window, like yoursite.com or https://www.yoursite.com.

You will see the language selection page. You can choose a language here so that rest of the installation is displayed in your own language. You can also use English for now and then later change the language.”

I uploaded the wordpress folder, see it on the server. When I go to galico.international or galico.international/wordpress I get the 404 screen. Nothing happens.

Do you think there is a problem because I don’t have a “.com” and an “.international” one instead?

    (@lorizb)

This doesn’t look to be like a wordpress issue, I am uploading files direct to my FTP to test them out. On another domain that I have as well. It isn’t working to view via the URL in a browser even though it shows that the file is there.

Thanks for your help this far. I just didn’t want you to spend time when it may be something that isn’t working on our servers end. I will try to figure this out and get back to you.

Thank you so much for your time and patience.

Lori, you’ve provided a lot of good information–thanks. Htdocs is your root folder, generally speaking.

When I go to galico.international, I do get the WordPress configuration screen. Please install that quickly now, as there is a hack about that scans for an incomplete installation & takes over the site.

While I normally use SSH to change ownership, an FTP client called WinSCP can also do this task. It’s available from winscp.net .

Once downloaded & installed, create a new site & enter your FTP info there. Next, right-click a folder & select ‘Properties’. Once that’s done, you can edit the user/group owner, then check the box to change ownership recursively, & wait–& wait…

    Thanks Jackie,

Yes they fixed something for me, it wasn’t under the “httpdocs” root folder. A custom option through me off. I tried setting it up through the configuration screen and then it had issues connecting to the database that I created.

I just deleted it all from the server and started again installing from Plesk so it automated the creation of the database and I could access it with no problems. I am testing it all out now!

Thank you again so much. I’ll let you know if this works ??

Sorry I didn’t hit “send” yesterday on this message.
