• After a move to a new host by restoring a backup to the new host) my pages are showing weird characters. For some reason, this is a well known problem with WP but there is no working solution to be fond anywhere. For that reason, I am almost ready to ditch WP and try another CMS. This is my last attempt to get it right.

    I see tips like: comment out the lines below in wp-config.php

    define(‘DB_CHARSET’, ‘utf8’);
    define(‘DB_COLLATE’, ”);

    This helps sometimes for some sites, although it remains a strange fix, but for one site, although this fixes the weird-character problem in the post it ALSO blanks my editor when editing these same posts. I can read the post but not edit it.

    The site: https://www.demaatschappijdatzijnwij.com/

    Is there Anyone out there who has the proper answer? And why is this problem so widely known and so little solved? Is there a plug-in to solve this problem? And Why does it keep happening?

    Sorry, I am somewhat irritated by this. I would appreciate a solution eagerly….

  • Looking at that page, I don’t see any odd characters. Did you get this sorted?

    For some reason, this is a well known problem with WP but there is no working solution to be fond anywhere.

    That’s because this isn’t really a WordPress problem. The new host has a different setup than the old host. That is the cause of this problem. (This answer some of the other questions you ask, as well.)

    it ALSO blanks my editor when editing these same posts. I can read the post but not edit it.

    That is weird. Have you tried the usual debugging techniques (i.e., temporarily turning off all plugins, clearing caches, trying another browser, trying another ISP, etc.)?

    Is there Anyone out there who has the proper answer?

    There is rarely a “proper” answer. As Mika is fond of saying, “every server is a snowflake”; i.e., every server is unique. What may work on one server may not work on another, even though the symptoms are identical.
