• Hello!

I am trying to set up sites for my various clients so that I can consolidate my effort administratively, yet give the appearance of each vendor’s product line being totally separate.

The site would need to change themes and content corresponding to the branding of the various vendors and products I represent based on the URL (or subdomain), but use the same core plugins.

    For instance:
    planes.mysite.com
    trains.mysite.com
    automobiles.mysite.com

Each site (plains, trains, automobiles) would have a different theme, set of content, resources, merchandise assortment, library, and so on, without showing that of the other vendors. I would also need to display both end user and dealer pricing in the store based on permission level we do both wholesale and retail sales – though I would imagine that depends on the e-commerce plugin I choose.

In any event, it’s the domain switching to change content and style that is the basic question. Not sure if my use case is a good candidate for MS or if I should look to a different method.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi.

Wordpress multisite can contain multiple sites that work a lot like a separate wordpress installations with their own: subdomain, admin panel, active theme, posts, pages, active plugins, and so on. The files of the plugins, themes and wordpress core exist only on one place and are updated globally, but you can activate a different theme/plugin on different sites.

I don’t fully understand everything that you asked, but it seems to me that it will work.

EDIT: You use the words changing and switching, as if there will be one site that changes somehow. There are multiple separate sites in the multisite, they have their own database tables.

    Thanks for your reply.

Bear with me, because I’m coming to WordPress from the Joomla world, and the operating methods are different.

So, let’s say I have ‘travelgear.com’ as my main domain name, and I have three clients: planegear.com, traingear.com, and automobilegear.com each of which has a different merchandise assortment. When a customer goes to ‘travelgear.com’ the URL directs them to my WP company site. But when they go to ‘planegear.com’ the site’s store would show only air-travel related products, pictures of aircraft, articles about traveling by aircraft, ads from various airlines and so on. Same idea for trains and cars.

Yes, separate DB tables are fine, and after finding and skimming through ‘The Ultimate Guide to WP Multisite’ I understand more clearly. It seems that changing themes and content based on URL is more easily managed by a plugin than natively in WP itself. If you can recommend one, that would be a huge help.

    Thanks in advance!

I mean that they also need to LOOK different depending on the URL.

    Different art.
    Different content.
    Different products in the store.

Different sites have different URLs (domains, subdomains, or subfolders) and different theme (design) and different content (post, pages, products).
