• I’m a newcomer and just installed WP, and now I found there are no quicktags in my writing page, but ONLY a quicktags link. Should I configure somewhere? Thank you!

  • There should be nothing to configure. A set of quicktags should just be there – have you tried hard refreshing the page ? CTRL-F5

Yes, I make sure for it! But no quicktags are there! The WP I used is the version of 31st, Aug!

I would recomend that you use the 1.2mingus version.
Nightlies are not recommended for production sites, and few people here can help with 1.3 issues.
See the sticky post in this section.

My quicktags have also disappeared, having used WordPress since 14 March 2004, so I think that must be 1.2 mingus (?). My last post was September 30, so it’s happened since then. I thought it might be the PHP5 problem I’ve heard about, but my host still has 4.3.8. Any ideas about this would be most appreciated.

I lost my quicktags in Safari using the latest nightly. However, they are there in Camino. Might try another browser if using an unstable version.

Yes, because Safari does not support the JS needed for quicktags people thought it was a bug in WP – so no quicktags in Safari.

Ah, javascript. Thanks, Beel. I’ve changed computer recently and that’s obviously it. I downloaded java for Mozilla, but that’s obviously not the JS required. Can you be more specific?

Did a google for Quicktags and javascript. Then it all came back to
    me. See https://weblogtoolscollection.com/archives/2004/03/24/wordpress-javascript-quicktags/
Hopefully this will save the day. ??

Um… a bit of faulty logic on my part. Still not working. Thanks for replying, Beel. Quicktags worked for me until last week, using Mozilla 1.7.2, Windows ME. I’ve now changed computer and use the same Mozilla but XP Home. I’ve tried IE 6 but to no avail. If it throws any light on it, when I try to delete a spam comment, I get this error message: ‘Sorry, you need to enable sending referrers, for this feature to work.’
I appear to have three java dlls.
    File name: NPJava32.dll
Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)
    File name: NPJPI142_05.dll
Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)
    File name: NPOJI610.dll
Java Plug-in 1.4.2_05 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)

admin-functions now checks what type of browser it is and if it is not Safari then quicktags is displayed. My thinking is you need to enable sending referrers or delete the browser detection and just echo the quicktags.
If you don’t know how to enable sending referrers, just do a search here. More than likely it will be the security settings in your firewall.

Referrers is an entirely separate problem from quicktags. I suggest you search for “enable sending referrers”.

Yes, of course it is, my head cold got the better of me.

My google for ‘enable referrers’ brought me back to WordPress support.

I didn’t understand a lot of what was being discussed there, I’m afraid.
I had a nightmare with my new XP home – more virus/trojan holes than a sieve. Now that I have it plugged, I’ve no idea how to backtrack. I’ve turned off my firewall (Agnitum Outpost); turned back on the Messenger Service (which had allowed in a spam popup on my desktop) , and allowed popups in Mozilla, all to no avail.
Now I’m crosseyed so I’ll leave it for tonight.

    Put the firewall back on.
    Kill messenger
    Forget the popups.
It’s a browser / firewall privacy issue, and you may need to add your blog to an ‘allowed’ or ‘whitelist’ type list so that the site can see that you are allowed to do what you need to.

Thanks very much, podz. I tried that, but to no avail. Then I got hit by 24 scumbag spam. I’m afraid, with gratitude to WordPress for a lot of enjoyment – it’s a superb piece of software and I’ll continue to promote it – I’m going to have to give it all up.
    This is my parting message:
Apologies, but due to technical problems, plus an infestation of scumbag spam, plus an increasing lack of time, I’m forced to take down my weblog.
I highly recommend WordPress as weblog software, for anyone who is thinking of taking the plunge, or tired with their current software. It’s open source, constantly updated, and has a thriving community only too willing to lend a hand.
Also, check out the links to other great blogs.
    All the best
