• Adding my voice to the NOT IN CORE appeal.
Decided to test-drive after reading the review on WPMU DEV as I build sites for non-code savvy clients who want a simple to use but secure interface – hence WordPress. After setting up on a demo site I thought I’d share my thoughts, which very much echo the review that sent me here in the first place. So here goes…
I know this is still in Beta but it needs way more development and functionality for it to be anywhere close to other block builder plugins that are currently out there, for example:

    • It overrides any theme page and post templates (I’ve tried several) and just gives you a plain single column option with no multi-column option.
    • The text editor is much more restrictive.
    • You can’t have different text formats in the same block (for example you can’t have a bulleted list like this unless you start a new block)
    • There’s no capability to vary spacing between or around blocks
    • Features are very, very limited and a step backwards from current useability

That said, a lot of the functions aren’t working yet so it seems there’s a long way to go in development yet, but as a plugin, I’m sure it will have it’s followers.

However, adding it to WordPress core as has been mooted would, in my opinion, be a huge mistake!

  • Perhaps contribute to the development of this plugin – and also contribute to core by weighing in at make.www.remarpro.com?

This is Open Source software, so if you use it, you are free to contribute.

If you have insight into how this plugin can be better, then that’s what beta testing is *for*.

Nobody is going to put a “not finished” visual editor into WordPress core.

@karen_r, every voice is welcome and listened to. I wanted to first clear something up, whatever happens there very likely will be a way to ‘turn off’ Gutenberg, if you wish.

A couple of responses to your really good observations:

It overrides any theme page and post templates (I’ve tried several) and just gives you a plain single column option with no multi-column option.

Work is being done here to avoid any issues with existing themes. It of course can always be better and that’s where some good, vast testing comes into play.

Features are very, very limited and a step backwards from current useability

The project is very early in the process and as such I would encourage you to try it now, the pace has been incredible with the work done on it.
