• Installed WP 4.8 on XAMPP 5.6.30 on Windows 7.

After a bit of initial fiddling, it was working. Got logged into WP admin area, adjusted varios settings and created two pages: Home and News. Set Home as static, and posts go to News. Made two test posts on News.

Now I cannot view any other page besides the home page. I can load only the home page, but if I navigate to News or Sample Page, it returns the absolutely useless 500 err.

I can access the admin area, log in, create & save new pages, etc., everything in admin works with one exception – the Permalinks Settings page. I can navigate to that, but as soon as I try to save or even just navigate away (or refresh the Home page on the main site) – bam, 500 err.

I can fix this by deleting the contents of .htaccess, saving the blank file, and refreshing the browser. But it remains that only the Home page is accessible on the main site, the other pages continue to return 500. And as soon as I visit the Permalinks Settings page in admin, any page after returns a 500 including the Home page.

  • And as soon as I visit the Permalinks Settings page in admin

Disable all plugins. Create an empty .htaccess and try to enable permalinks

No plugins have been installed or enabled as yet (this is a completely fresh install), and the .htaccess trick has been tried with no effect, as described.

I should clarify that this happens merely visiting the Permalinks Settings page without making any changes.
