• I am brand new to WP, and am hosting it on my site.

I was messing with my sidebar.php file, assuming I could simply restore it from the original version, which I have in a different folder.

However, the messed up version keeps “coming back”. I am using ftp, go up to my blogs folder on the server, and trying to replace the new file with the old. I even deleted the new sidebar.php folder completely from the server, and then replaced it, and the old one still came back.

    Obviously I am missing something.

    How to fix now?
    How to avoid next time?

    Thanks!

  • I you had any widgets enabled, disable them, deactivate all plugins. Delete the file, and upload the new one again. Then reactivate the plugins. See if this works.

Before you replied, I went up to the server, deleted the whole theme, and re-posted it to the server from a clean copy. Now all is back to original.

For the future, what am I supposed to backup (and how) before messing the php files? I’m not used to working with databases; was my problem related to that somehow?

I’m finding the codex a little hard to navigate; wishing I had a book or manual that focused on how to modify templates, and then learn other intermediate things. The books I’ve glanced at are expensive at $30, and spend so much time on how to download a theme.

    Thanks for all help

you backup what youre messing with it — you mess with files — you back up files. How? you save the files to ‘someplace” before you make changes to them. A folder on your own computer, for instance????

    no. you were editing files.

Then I don’t know what I’m missing here. Of course you back up the files you are working with. So what I don’t get is how did the file I replaced, then deleted, keep coming back? Oh well; I will learn this too.
