404page does not work

Hello, first I installed 404page as a test on https://www.swebdesign.biz/wordpress which runs on Thesis 2.2. This worked fine. On this site my permalink settings are ‘post name’ links.
Then I tried it on a site which I moved from a subfolder to the root folder. I got database connection errors and had to change the ‘post name’ links (in the wp permalink settings) to ‘plain’ links.
As the 404 page setting of Thesis does not work I tried 404page. I can choose the page in the 404page option panel. But the page does not appear. Just the default server message.
Q: Does the 404page plugin not work if the page is a ‘plain’ link?

“Login to your server using FTP, and modify the .htaccess file which is located in the same location where folders like /wp-content/ and /wp-includes/ are located. The easiest thing you can do is to temporarily make the file writeable by changing the permissions to 666. Then repeat the original solution. Don’t forget to change the permissions back to 66”.
Pretty permalinks are working again and also the custom 404 page.
