password change

    Hi,

    My site is recently restored after being hacked into.

    But i can’t login to my site.

    There’s 1 admin account, when i try to change the password the user account is for an author account not the admin account.

    How else can i get in?

  • Hello @sharonlandis,

    In this case I would contact the person that restored your site. The only option I can think of is the change the author role to an admin role via the database itself.

    Thanks Niels,

    I believe I got into this problem by giving a stranger (a very well known one) access to my site, so I’m not inclined to do that again.

    The restore was done by my hosting provider and the front line isn’t very helpful/knowledgeable.

    To do this myself, I assume through CPanel, where do I start?

    I’m am 100% sure you mean well but please never ask for credentials on these forums.

    Now for the why: The internet is a wonderful place full of very nice people and a few very bad ones. I’m sure everyone here is very nice however, by giving some ones keys to your house you are trusting they wont steal anything. Likewise the person who takes the keys is now responsible for the house FOREVER.

    Please be aware that repeatedly asking for credentials may result in losing access to the forums.

    So, bottom line: Do not ask for or offer credentials on the forums.

    Thanks for clarifying this and sharing the link. I wasn’t aware of this. I only have the best intentions as I love to support people. Otherwise I wouldn’t organise WordPress Meetups and WordCamps on a regular base. But you’re totally right. I won’t make that mistake twice! ??
