Help a Newbie?

    I have a few questions that I need answered before I decide to install wordpress.

    1. I have multiple blogs right now (for instance: https://driftingfocus.wordpress.com/ and https://jindowaygook.wordpress.com/), and I am wondering if I will have to install multiple databases to continue having those blogs? Also, if I do, will login work the same as now in that I only have to log in once to manage the different blogs, or will I have to have multiple logins?

    2. Will the content I have now shift over, or will I have to re-do everything?

    3. I have heard a few negative things about the latest version. Since this will be hosted on a friend’s server, I’m concerned about viruses, etc. Is there an earlier version I should install?

    4. Do blog stats still work or will I need a plugin for that?

  • Hey I am kind of in the same boat. I have a wordpress.com blog that I want to switch over to .org and was wondering how much time this would take and how others have felt about making the switch themselves. I don’t want to interrupt my blog.

    1) You can have multiple blogs in one database. It involves changing the table_prefix for each install in wp-config.php. See the codex:

    You will need multiple logins.

    2) The move is a fairly simple one. Basically, you set up a new install on your hosted server. You then do an export of contents from old blog and import them on the new blog. See the codex:

    3) That’s nonsense. Almost all updates are security releases – the newest is the safest by far. There are things you can do to make it better. See the codex:

    4) You will need a plugin (don’t quote me but I think there is one that will carry over your .com stats).

    It takes relatively little time if you will read the documentation and don’t just assume anything. The benefits are total control over your blog – any theme or plugin – ads – customizations, etc.

    So there’s absolutely no way to manage multiple blogs via one login, like on wordpress.com?

    Well, you can make different categories (or tags) for different “blogs”, but I don’t know if that’s what you are looking for.

    [edit] or maybe you can have a look at mu.www.remarpro.com, I believe that’s what wp.com uses too. I’ve never worked with it myself.

    The problem with the categories method is that they all still show up on the main page of the blog. I’d rather be able to point people to a blog that only has my personal posts, or my teaching posts, etc. I don’t really want my co-workers looking at my personal life, and most people who read my personal blog don’t want to see my teaching stuff, etc.
