Comments are closed—but shouldn’t be!

Comments are closed, but shouldn’t be. I have hundreds of posts. All I spot-checked are closed for comments, but I didn’t close them. Discussion settings are set to “allow” (and have been for years). Screen options has both discussion and comments checked. Allow comments is checked on the posts I looked at. What else could it be? There must be a global fix.
