Featured images not resized / displayed properly

I have a small problem with this theme: The featured images of my posts after the 2017-04-15 are resized differently than before and because of this are cropped right and left. I mostly use images in 1920*1080 or 1280*720 as featured images, in posts before this date they are displayed as resized to 840*480 and show as they should be, but after that date, all images are resized to 850*550 and cropped left and right, no matter of their aspect ratio.

The post slider shows the correctly, though.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this behavior?

UPDATE: I found the reason to be the setting in functions.php, though I don’t know why older posts are resized differently, maybe because of another theme I used before Maxwell. I’ll just resize the images to 850*xxx as the .
