I just noticed the WP Mailto Link protection is now only working for signed in admin users.

When I log out, the email addresses on the post or page are not protected.
For my production site I switched to the “Email Encoder Bundle – Protect Email Address” which is working OK.

You can see the problem on my test site:

    Update:
It seems to be an incompatibility between WP Mailto Link and the WP-SpamShield plugin.

I had been using WP-SpamFree with no problems, but I recently replaced it with WP-SpamShield.
WP-SpamShield is an upgrade from the older WP-SpamFree plugin (by the same author).

I will report this in the WP-SpamShield support forum

The conflict is because WP-SpamShield also has its own email obfuscation function which is taking precedence on posts/pages viewed by non-logged-in visitors to the site.

WP-SpamShield email protection does not alter the visible appearance of the email address on screen but email addresses in the html code (which does not rely on javascript) are obfuscated.

The solution to the conflict is either

    • use WP-SpamShield only, or
    • use WP Mailto Links and WP-SpamShield and take care to tick the “Disable email harvester protection” checkbox
