Creating line breaks within a table

HI,

I am trying to create line breaks within a table and was told using the </br> would work, however its not.
Here is the code, any tips please? Its part of a larger table, I’ve just extracted the relevant code
<tr>
<td class=””>1</td>
<td class=”pl” colspan=”4″>TEST TEXT LINE 1 </br> Test Text Line 2</br></td>
</tr>
