After attempting to upgrade numerous times from 2.5.1 to 2.6.3 and running into a problem with the admin login no longer functioning (Yea i know there are a ton of solutions to this posted in this forum, but none of them worked), I finally decided to do a clean install and try to import the old blogs contents into the new one.

However, the new version of WordPress now is displaying the German accented characters funny, and now how the original had displayed it. Yet the contents of the posts themselves are unchanged, it is the exact same data being displayed from one to the other, with a very drastic difference in appearance.

I did not notice any settings in the config, the database, or the admin settings that would indicate any difference in how the browser should display the characters…. does anyone know what I need to do to get it to display the German accents correctly?

  • Not too sure what value you need but did you try changing your Encoding for pages and feeds via Administration > Settings > Reading? If you have a database backup from your original blog you can check what your old setting was by looking for the ‘blog_charset’ value in the wp_options table.

Yeah I already checked that, although I imported all the tables from the previous installation, including the options table, so all my settings *should* in theory be identical. I do not understand why there would be any difference in how the content is displayed.

Currently, the old install is still in place, with the fresh install residing in a test directory. Both versions are using the same database, with a different table prefix. If you are able to, contact me at [email protected] and I can provide you with a url to both blogs, as well as the user credentials you will require to view the 2.5 version.
Maybe if you can look at it you’ll be able to understand the problem better… it really appears as if it is simply a problem with how the browser is now displaying the accented characters, even though they displayed perfectly fine in the original blog.

I can only guess then that deleting the DB_CHARSET and DB_COLLATE statements in the wp-config.php file might work…

Thank you Michael… that did the trick.
