Is there a reason why a theme would have both a index.php and a home.php? Are there reasons to use one over the other?

I have read that “If home.php is missing, WordPress looks for a file called index.php in the active theme’s directory, and uses that template to generate the page.”

If that is the case then why would I need both and can I ditch one? I prefer the layout of my home.php file.
