Check out CycleMart.us to see Yak in action. All product information is managed by Yak, including the shopping cart. CycleMart.us uses a “heavily” modified version of Yak, incorporating new features and customizations such as:

    Affiliate & Referrer Linking
Customizable Affiliate Pricing (Shipping and Unit Price)
    Customizable Product Templates
    Customizable Shopping Cart
Multiple Credit Card Gateways (Authorize.net, etc)
    New Data Fields: SKU, Weight
    Dynamic Shipping Quotes
Customer Payment Tracking / Accounts Receivable
    Payment Manager Admin Panel
    New Invoicing / Receipt Printing
Improved Orders Admin Panel (to include payments and receipt printing)

From a developer perspective, I found this plugin to be a good choice to work with, based on ease of customization and existing functionality / feature set. WP-Shopping-Cart was too feature intensive for this project.

The major issue that I had was its programming logic and code structure: it is incredibly dirty (sorry Jason). There are, however, some elegant parts strewn about and a great set of hooks into the core. If I continue with Yak as a developer, I would have to rewrite the code base.

Overall I give it two thumbs up. It works great, it’s fast and has the necessary features that “most” people would want. Great job. I recommend it.

  • Heh. No need for apologies. I’ve been developing for a loooong time, so I recognise the flaws in my code as well as anyone. The main problem is that Yak evolved, it wasn’t designed. What started off as a simple idea for something my wife needed has been bolted onto, stitched up, plastered, disassembled, reassembled, etc, etc, etc. I’ve made vague attempts to tidy up, but new features always seem to take priority over fixing structural problems. I would redesign the codebase myself, if I had the time (or was independently wealthy).

That said, Cyclemart.us is very impressive. Glad you were able to adapt YAK to your purposes, even if it wasn’t quite as straight-forward as it could’ve been.

tzmartin: would you be interested in sharing that customizations? I’m starting to use Yak and I’m very interested in all the different approaches this plugin can give us. If you’re interested, please let me know through [email protected].
