Playing With Permalinks

I want to have permalinks that don’t include the base “category/” in them when a category is selected. For instance, instead of:
https://www.url.com/category/category_name
I want:
https://www.url.com/category_name.
How can I do this? “category” is the default base, so I’m not sure how I can remove it. Thoughts?
