Not Found

If everything was done right and if your server supports it, you shouldn’t be getting a 404 error. A very common problem is with nested directories, meaning the blog was installed at domain.com/wordpress, but you are trying to access it at domain.com… or it was installed in your home folder instead of your root directory, or something similar. Check that. You need to know the exact path to the files. Check to make sure that the files exist and upload again if needs be.

I am having the same problem. The Home page shows up but when I try to click on the post title I get it.

How do I fix it

Did you play around with the permalink settings? If so did you edit your .htaccess file?

The problem is I have no idea how to do that
And everything in Codex is way above my head

What sort of hosting have you got? Is it on windows or Linux?

Have you used ftp before? If so it won’t take a minute to fix everything.

Windows and I have used the ftp. I can find the htaccess but have no idea what code to put in there

Did you use the month and name option in the permalinks area?

Scroll right down in the permalinks setting area and you will see a grey box – copy everything in there (should say things like rewrite etc) and paste into the htaccess file.

make sure word wrap is off in notepad if that’s what you’re going to use to edit the htaccess file once downloaded.

And when you go to upload your edited file using ftp make sure the upload setting is set to ASCII and not binary – you can change it back once you’re finished uploading htaccess.
