Continuous Spam Form Entries

Current plan is to get a honeypot style solution in place in version 1.2.2 within the next week. We’re exploring the idea of something like Google CAPTCHA’s “I am human” checkbox for a more feature-based solution in 1.3.0

@mishayla would love some help testing some changes, if you don’t mind. I can provide a honeypot-patched version of the plugin. If you could install and see spam dies down significantly, if not completely, that’d awesome and I’d be forever in debt to you.

Honeypot-level spam control should be available to everyone in the 1.2.2 release, with further feature plans being explored for 1.3.0 since honeypots aren’t a perfect solution. Hopefully this stymies a lot of incoming spam though.

You covered one question we had with regards to what version you’re presently running. That has a honeypot guard, as I assume you noted in the changelog. We are also presently working on a Google reCAPTCHA spam guard feature, but do not have it completed yet.

As a followup question, what sort of volume are you seeing for the spam? Is it a few total, or is it hundreds at a time?

@mishayla, @coachgee2, if either of you are willing, we’d love some help testing Google reCAPTCHA integration. It’ll be the “I am human” checkbox version, and not invisible version. Let us know and we can provide a copy of the plugin with it. If we confirm success with it, we’ll get it released to everyone.

We are using 1.2.3 and I don’t see any options for filtering. We are getting slammed with spam as well. Is there an option I am missing? Can we participate in the reCAPTCHA integration?

The initial honeypot was all in the background and a hidden field not meant to be filled in. The idea is that spam bots would fill them in. We check for a value set and if one is set, we reject the submission. Not foolproof as you’re experiencing, but I wonder how much it’s not letting through as well.

We would love some extra confirmation that the Google reCAPTCHA implementation is helping curb spam.

@mishayla If you haven’t yet, please update to the latest version of the plugin, it has the Google reCAPTCHA setup in it.

Update – I have been running 1.2.5 for awhile now with reCAPTCHA configured and I am still getting several spam entries a day.

We’re going to be doubling up with the original honeypot solution on top of the Google setup, in the next major version.

One question I have is if it’s the exact same volume getting through, or just a partial amount. If the volume has been cut, then there is something working, just not as efficiently as we’d like.
