calender hack

is there a way that i can change the way how the calender looks entirely. what i wanted to archieve is that the entire calender will display as a strip and whenever there is a new entries it creates a ‘|’ if there are more entries that day it will creates a thicker line. so by the end of the month it will have something like a bar code. i saw something similar in a japanese magazine but i couldn’t find anything similar to it. since i am not a programmer myself, anyone here would like to take up a challenge or lead me a way to accomplish this task?
