What are Categories and what are their function ?

    I would like to know what Categories are and what their Function(s) specifically is?

    I have seen some blogs having posts with the following at top or bottom:

    Filed Under: Ariste, Rock Artiste

    *******************************

    I would suppose these are posts with 2 (or more) categories. What are the essence and meaning of these?
