Have both header & featured image on pages

Im in a tuff spot. I thought with tempera you could add featured image per page and have the header as well. I need the header to appear on all pages including the presentation page, which I have done. Only to find out that the header is sacrificed to accommodate the featured image on a sub page when enabled and selected. I have tried the custom header plugin thing. No go. Also tried the assign different header per page scripting thing. Something in the theme prevents it from working.
Any work arounds would be appreciated.
