Trying to troubleshoot the log-in options of bbp Style Pack. I’m also using bbp Private Groups.

    1. I have “Add login/logout to menu items” active.
Login menu item description is “Log in”
Logout menu item description is “Log out”
Neither item has a css class listed
Items are set to “Only show on forum pages” and “Only show on the primary menu”

    2. Login page is left blank. (I use the LoginPress plug-in to customize the standard log-in screen.)
Logout page is set to https://localhost:8888/ab/ (IOW, the home page)
Logged in text is set to “You’ve already logged in.”

Other options in section (2) and all in (3) are left blank.

    PROBLEMS:
    1. The forum page only loads if I type in the URL explicitly. If I use the menu item that should load the same URL, the site reverts to the home page. This behavior occurs whether or not I’m logged in. Is it a coincidence that that URL serves as the logout page as well?

    2. When I do load the forum page as a logged-out user, I get the “Oh bother” empty-forum message rather than a “please log in” message or something more appropriate. I know how to customize the messages, but this one also applies when a forum actually is empty. How do I fix this?

    3. When I log in, I’m taken back to the home page, not to the forum page. Now I’m faced with problem (1) above again.

The private groups plug-in is working properly. When/if I do manage to load the forums, I see the correct sections for the user credentials with which I’ve logged in.

BBPress 2.5.12, WP 4.7.1, bbp Style Pack 3.4.2, bbp Private Groups 3.2.10, LoginPress 1.0.5 running locally under MAMP 1.9.6 with PHP version 5.3.5. I’m using a child theme based on GeneratePress 1.2.41 with version 1.2.92 of the GeneratePress Premium plug-in.

    what have you got in

Dashboard>settings>general>wordpress address and site address ?

    Hi, Robin:

Both fields are set to localhost:8888/ab

(Leaving off the “https://” so the above doesn’t turn into a link)

“ab” is the correct name of the folder in which I’ve installed the site.

ok, so login should send you to

    localhost:8888/ab/wp-login.php

does that work if you put it in the url

I think most of your issues relate to a local installation.

If without either of my plugins running you can not go to the forums from the menu then my plugins are not the problem.

Typing the log-in link into the browser loads the log-in screen correctly.

Let me try disabling the plug-ins and see what happens. Before I do that, however, what’s the best way to back up my settings?

    Thread Starter bpc

    (@bpc)

OK, I think I’ve narrowed this down.

If I load the forums without being logged in, why doesn’t that trigger the message in the file feedback-no-access.php?

Instead, what I’m getting comes from feedback-no-forums.php

Wouldn’t it make better sense to trigger the no-access message instead of the no-forums message? Or is that something a plug-in can do?

BTW, I deactivated and reactivated both plug-ins. Most of my settings stayed in place.

ok, I’m not really sure how much further help I can be.

I have no real experience of running on MAMP, but do know that bbpress can have issues with it.

I suspect that some/all of your issues are related to not just a local installation, but one with wordpress in a sub directory.

My parting suggestion would be to run the url without the ab part.

    (@bpc)

Actually , I think this entire problem stems from one misunderstanding on my part.

On the Log-in tab of bbp Style Pack, the Logged-in Redirect Field includes this instruction:

If you are using [ bbp-login ], then if you enter a full url of the page with this shortcode here, users will be redirected to that page instead of getting the “you are already logged in” above

A full URL of the page with which shortcode? [ bbp-login ] belongs on the log-in page. What’s the shortcode for the logged-in redirect page?

I will put it on the forum page, and all my problems will go away. My log-in process will stop returning to the log-in page and displaying the “You’re logged in” message.

At this point, that’s my only problem.

    Plugin Author Robin W

[ bbp-login ] is a shortcode which can be used on any page.

Many users will create a page, add this code (and usually some welcome text) and use this as the forum login rather than use wordpress, so yes you would in that case have a url to a page with the login shortcode on it

    Thread Starter bpc

    (@bpc)

So let me make sure I’m getting this right.

The [ bbp-login ] code goes on the main page of the forum. The address of that page goes in the redirect field on the Login tab of bbp Style Pack. That means that after a user logs in, s/he gets redirected to the forum page.

    Is that correct?

    Thread Starter bpc

    (@bpc)

I’m just trying to wrestle with the post log-in redirect from the log-in page to the forum page. I’m trying to take the member directly from the log-in page to the forums. Putting the shortcode on the forum page didn’t work. All I saw was the “You’re already logged in” message.

Is there another shortcode for the redirect? I’m afraid I don’t understand the directions for this part of the Login tab in bbp Style Pack.

The [ bbp-login ] code goes on the main page of the forum

no it goes on any page you care to create

    as I said before

Sorry, what I’m trying to get is how to redirect a user to the forums page after s/he logs in.

From the log-in screen, the site immediately goes back to the home page. I’m trying to get it to redirect to the forum page instead.

I don’t mean to be dense. Just don’t see how this is done.

    Plugin Author Robin W

    (@robin-w)

ok, I’m still wary of the fact that you are on a local installation, but how the login part of the plugin works on a network installation is.

    1. create a page
    2. put [bbp-login] in it
    3. save/publish and make a note of the url
    4. put that url into the ‘login page’ in the settings
    5. put your forums url into the ‘logged in redirect’ in the settings
