We’ve been running this plugin for over a year now without issues. We are not really using the 2nd language, but the option has been there for us.

About 2-3 months ago we noticed our google results for our name were showing as domain.com/en where previously it has always shown as domain.com.

When you visit our site from the google showing as domain.com/en it takes you directly to domain.com without the EN. Our settings are checked yes to hide default language, and the default language in the plugin are set to hide the default /en.

We see that the plugin has created 3 hreflang one for EN, ES and for default. I am not clear on whether we should see all three of these in the source when viewing the homepage or not.

Our goal is simply to get our google results back to showing as .com without /en.

  • Can you give me a link to your site?

    Hi Terry,

its https://www.ivfmd.com (will likely redact later).

As I type in search box on Google – site:https://www.ivfmd.com/

All results are correct, so without adding /en

    See screenshot

    Hi Terry,

we noticed that too, our issue is when googling “ivfmd” that the results are shown with /en.

Not here, also not on StartPage

    Hi Terry,

I checked using Startpage, i see it as /en. Please see the screenshot https://imgur.com/nQs4HIX

Strange, it is here correct also using Bing.com

    Some cache problem maybe?

We have disabled our cache plugin today. But I am uncertain if this is the root cause.

Thats very odd, bing is correctly showing just .com…

You can try it on another computer that has not been in communication with your site

I tried it on a computer that has never accessed the site or ever searched for IVFMD. The listings display with the /en. Here is a link: Google Listing Display Note that the listing that ends .net is not ours. Thanks for your help!

The problem is that I am directed to the Dutch version of Google.

Your link in the screenshot is https://www.google.com/#q=ivfmd&dinr=1

    Here this changes to https://www.google.nl/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=fkBdWJHONerG8AezmrLIAQ#q=ivfmd&dinr=1

All links are here without /en/

Google uses different servers and these are not all equal? What is your country?

    Google rules……???

    Thread Starter lelantus

    (@lelantus)

Could this be because of the hreflang rules are setup for en and es and default? So visits from a EN-US location are defaulting to en despite the Default-x rule? But visits from dutch are directly taking the Default-x.

This should not be… see the plugin authors comment; Browser re-direction based on language

When SEO robots visit your site, they will get language encoded by URL or otherwise always the default language, since robots do not use cookies or referrer. All pages also set headers ‘<link hreflang=”xx” …>’ and ‘<link hreflang=”x-default” …>’ as recommended by Google.

I’ve found something interesting…. (also disturbing)

Go to Google Search from a different location & device

    Choose
    Country: Dutch
    Language: Dutch
    Device: (current)
    Search for ivfmd

    Choose again
    Country: United States
    Language: English
    Device: (current)
    Search for ivfmd

Now here the links are displayed with /en – Can you confirm this?

    Also
    Choose again
    Country: Spain
    Language: Spanish
    Device: (current)
    Search for ivfmd

Now here the links are displayed with /es – This is now nice right?

The fact that from a Spanish location it is showing up as /es means that the hreflang tags that are being generated from the plugin are not meeting google’s requirements. I suspect that the appropriate way to list the hreflang is just to have default and es and there should not be any hreflang for the en.

Do you know what file contains the code that is generating the hreflang lines of code?
