So I bought a domain, installed WP with the “1 click” option Dreamhost offers, waited 24 hours and decided to start by changing the theme. I went to upload the theme, but it wouldn’t let me. Said I don’t have permission. The files are owned by “root” and I don’t know how to change it.

For this new site I created a new user in my Dreamhost account so I don’t know if that has anything to do with as I logged in as the old user, the first user and still couldn’t upload anything. I can’t even post a photo in a regular WP post.

What the heck am I doing wrong? Did I install WP to the wrong directory, place, etc? Do I need to reinstall?

  • You may have to use an ftp program. Filezilla works very well.

could be, but i run another wp site that works very well with me using Internet Explorer and/or the built in upload method offers to upload photos, songs, new themes, etc.

Would Filezilla get me permission to wp content/ themes?

Using Internet Explorer for FTP is not a great idea. In fact it’s a security risk as IE sends your password in clear text for anyone (with half a clue) to steal it.

Use an FTP client such as Filezilla which is DESIGNED to interact with your files on a web server.

    Good luck.

alright, well thanks for the recommendations on how to ftp files. unfortunately, that’s not the problem i’m having. as stated above, i’m having problem ftping anything to a newly registered, newly wp installed site. i can’t see to get permission.

    my question is this:

the owner of the dir is “root” and i am not the owner even though i registered the domain, run the hosting account and by all means, should have permission to ftp files to the site, but for some reason do not and can’t seem to figure out how to assign these permissions to myself.

    talk to your web host.

I just sent an email to wordpress and they changed the permissions. Thanks to those who tried to help.
