Where to put .po & .mo files?

    I am a bit confused ??
    I am trying to translate BuddyBoss Theme and LearnDash plugin, plus few other plugins which we use on the same web. Original site is in English, and we want it in German.
    I understand how does Locco Translate works, but I am confused where I should put files to avoid deletion when update occurs.
    Is the right lace wp-content/languages or wp-content/languages/loco?
    Where is Theme looking for language first?
    Do I need to tell Theme to look into specific folder for language?
    The BuddyBoss theme already contains some DE_de.po files inside the theme, but I don’t know what happens with those files after I make new custom translation and put it in wp-content/languages or wp-content/languages/loco? What is the most relevant path for Theme to look for translation first?
    I wrote a long post, but I tried to explain my confusion.
