Product images not displaying (variable products)

Hi, product images are not displaying on the product page, but if I click the blank space where the image should be the lightbox opens correctly. This is happening on variable products only.

So far I have tried:
1. Disabling all plugins except woocommerce. All woocommerce extensions, addons etc were also disabled
2. Adding images to each variation of the product in the product editor
3. Refreshing plugin files
4. Clearing caches
5. Changing image sizes and resolutions, though it works fine for simple products.

Theme is Divi, so it’s not really possible to try a different theme without losing all site layouts etc. However, I’m using the divi shop module recommended for woocommerce and there are no custom css or other theme modifications on the site.
