• Hi,

I’m hoping that somebody has come across a similar issue and can offer some advice…

A website that I work on recently ran into the dreaded internal 500 server error. A number of plugins had been updated but the website didn’t go down until 48-60 hours after the plugin updates.

My understanding was that if it was a plugin fault then it would have thrown an error at the time of the update? Has anybody come across this before?

Fortunately our I.T. team was able to restore the site to a version before the plugin updates, but i’m not convinced it was a plugin update that caused the issue.

    I would appreciate any advice.

    Cheers

    James

  • There is also a chance the the problem was with your web-host.
It has happened to me before and I had to contact them to fix it.

Another thing that I’ve come across is that the PHP memory limit in WordPress is to low and you just need to increase it.

Since the site went down long after the plugins updates, it is very unlikely that it was caused by plugins…

Do the updates one at a time after making a full backup. If the site is still up, then it’s not the updates. While it’s up, it’s hard to diagnose what was (or maybe is) wrong.

Thank you both very much for getting back to me regarding the server 500 issue.
It does sound like something other than plugin updates then as I assumed, unfortunately there is a risk it will pop up again if that’s the case.

I did also investigate the memory limit which is set to 256mb so hopefully that should be fine.

I suspect its a change to the internal server that my I.T. team have done…
