• How come on my WordPress install I have had a sudden influx of spam? I have had over 600 in the last two weeks.

The only thing I’ve done is change the template (I tried Azure Hut, which I really liked, but spam became an issue after that).

I followed some tutorials, and now you have to have a previously approved comment, and I moderate them. So how does spam get through as approved and online without me checking it?

I’ve disabled it for my pages, but to no avail. I do use Akismet (latest version) and now at a loss. Any ideas?

On average I get around 1 spam comment every two minutes at the moment – grrr…

  • You might try the recaptcha plug-in:

I tried that, but no CAPTCHA image shows up at all. So I got rid of that. A coder friend of mine reckons there is a flaw in the comments system. Basically it goes like this :

User create insecure blog. People spam once with a bot of some kind.

User secures blog, but the comments form system allows continual spam because of form authentication AFTER comment is placed. This means that someone could exploit the blog in this exceptional circumstance.

I am probably going to start from scratch, copy my backup DB, and secure the site BEFORE it goes live.

(Not that I had many *real* comments anyway ?? )

SpamKarma2 and Bad Behavior Plugins with Akismet helped a lot from comments from even appearing in the first place, only a few were able to get through.
