Hi there,

This means that you need to have the Google Maps API Javascript added to your API key. Google Places requires BOTH the Places API and the Maps API.

I have wasted 4 hours to try to get this to work. I am sure this is a good plugin, but honestly, the instructions are out of date. I have tried numerous times to add the additional google. map api to no avail.It won’t let me.

I am about to give up.

If you have created a project and enabled the Google Places API already (as well as created your API Key and OAuth ID for the website(s) to use the plugin) then all you have to do is go into the API library and enable Google Maps Javascript API. Wait a few minutes and it will work.

I was having this problem today when I wanted to the plugin to a new website (I have 3 websites using same project and API Key).

Matt, this is a great plugin, and I know it’s inherently complicated because of the Google API usage but the instructions could be simplified and more clearly explained within the plugin settings page. Maybe just a little bullet list like:

“Here are the 4 things you need to do to get this working:

1.) Setup a project for Google API – Link here
2.) Enable Both Places API and Maps Javascript API – Link here
3.) Create API Key For your project – Link Here
4.) Add OAuth Access for Websites (You can have multiple websites use same API Key by having separate OAuth Access) – Link Here

Put something like that on the settings page I think it’d go a long way to help

Also, I think you should allow the option to just manually input the PlaceID, since it’s pretty easy to get that using the Google PlaceID finder. Maybe even just remove the functionality on the Widget input (and remove the need for the maps javascript API) and just link straight to that and tell the user to get the ID and input it?

Thanks for the feedback. Google definitely doesn’t make it easy. I’ll review our documentation — just a note that it’s been updated three times in the past year due to continual changes in the Google API Console.
