On one WordPress install I have, I use the login URL of “domain-name.com/wp-login.php”. Notice there is no “www” prefix.

When using this domain URL configuration, login fails once. Trying it again, same Username and password, the login succeeds. The odd time, the login fails repeatedly, then suddenly it succeeds after a few tries.

When using the domain URL with a “www” prefix, the login succeeds every time.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Why does the login fail once then succeed a second time without the “www” URL prefix?
    2. How can I fix this issue?

I ask this because users with accounts are not always WordPress literate, and when they access the login page without the use of “www”, their login will fail and give the wrong impression that their credentials are incorrect.

    Thanks

That is certainly strange. You may want to check your Site URL, to see how it was configured. In the long run, if you don’t want to use www you can change the Site URL. If you get stuck and can’t find a solution, you can always replace core files as a last result.
