Adding Widgets and understading them

    I just wanted to bounce of someone who is familiar with Widgets.

    Is it right to say a Widget is a bit of code that you place in your template file, eg the sidebar, that you can then activate/turn on/off from your admin of your WP site?

    An example of a Widget could be showing the last 5 comments in your side bar?

  • No, it is not right.
    Widgets = fancy plugins. You activate them as any other plugins. There are, though, widgets that come out of the box with your basic WP install.
    Some of them need that you put a code snippet (tag) where it is supposed to appear, others do it by themselves.

    In Design > Widgets you add them to your sidebar(s).
