Most widgets areas not working

Using the lite version – but none of the widget areas are working well except the global sidebar. When I add things to widget areas Home 2, 3 or 4, nothing changes. My home page is showing 1 wide column of recent posts under the main image, and I can’t get it to form 2 columns or change what’s in those widgets.
